This is a short, moderately
steep climb up the Indian Springs Trail. The Forest
Service is reclaiming the trail after it was overwhelmed by
fast-growing brush following the Storrie Fire in 2000.
As of 2011, they have cleared up to a huge brush patch on a
flat part of the ridge a few miles up.
This hike is mostly in
forest, and takes the short spur trail to a high point on
the ridge tongue-in-cheek called a "hill" above Indian Creek
in its canyon far below. There is another "hill" (Red
Hill) that looms nearly 4000' above Highway 70 a few miles
upstream. It goes without saying that this is big
mountain country.
-----
This is low elevation,
despite having big mountains all around, and is snow-free
most of the winter. CalTrans has
a webcam higher up the canyon, and if it is snow-free
there it will likely be snow-free for this hike. If
snow encountered, turn back, and try hiking the Pacific
Crest Trail in to Chips Creek as a lower elevation
alternative. Snow and ice on steep slopes can be very
dangerous.
